Modernism meets electrical tape
Author: Mariëlle olde Hartman-Toebes
HellermannTyton’s HelaTape Flex is not only suitable for professional electricians and installers. The young artists at the Gerrit Rietveld College in Utrecht, The Netherlands also use electrical tape. Not for insulating, bundling or securing cables, but for creating smooth lines in bold colours. HellermannTyton Netherlands sponsored one of the college’s projects with tapes so that young artists could get closer to Piet Mondrian, the famous Dutch artist known for his sharp lines and primary coloured squares.
Electrical tape meets abstract art
With its project Beleef De Stijl, the Gerrit Rietveld College drew attention to the 100th anniversary of the De Stijl (The Style) artistic movement. Under the direction of professional artist Bonno van Doorn, the young artists used HelaTape Flex tapes in different colours to make abstract art on the windows and floors of the college. On 3 November 2017 the Gerrit Rietveld College ended the project with a large exhibition in and around the college.
The usual application of HelaTape electrical tape
HelaTape Flex is just one of the many types of professional electrical tapes that HellermannTyton supplies. The PVC tape is reliable and offers a quick way for repairing cables and sealing electrical connections. Electricians and installers often use it as a visual warning for temporary cabling or for clearly marking wires.
The HelaTape electrical tape collection
The HelaTape product range includes standard and highly durable PVC electrical tapes. There are also conductive tapes are for insulating all types of electrical connections and high temperature tapes that provide superior arc and flame resistance – this material creates a thermal insulating residue when exposed to fire and is also water, chemical and UV resistant. While HelaTape Flex 1000+ is easy to work with even down to temperatures as low as-18 °C and HelaTape Tex textile tape can be removed without leaving any sticky residue, self-amalgamating HelaTape can be used for air-tight and water-tight sealing. Thanks to the diversity of the range there is a HelaTape solution for any situation. They all have one thing in common – high quality standards.
Do you know of an innovative application for our electrical tapes?
The Style in The City foundation (Stichting de Stijl in De Stad) was so inspired by the artwork presented to our former director Stephan Jungermann at his farewell party that they brought us together with the Gerrit Rietveld College. HellermannTyton was especially happy to sponsor the Mondrian project with HelaTape Flex because the artist was born in Amersfort in the The Netherlands, which is where HellermannTyton BV happens to be based.
We are always curious to learn about unconventional and wonderful applications for our tapes. Please share your ideas and experiences with us below and leave a comment!

This was an interesting blog to read. Never expected tape can be used in art. You have to be very creative to think out of the box. It’s very beautiful to see this modernism. I wonder what idea this artist will think up next. Is he able to use other materials too?
